Who is the smartest baseball player in the game today? A real gamer?

I'm talking about the guy that knows wear to be on the field at all times. He knows who to back up on certain plays without having his dugout yell and direct him. He knows how to play batters and is a sound fielder. Most of all he comes to play everyday.Who is the smartest baseball player in the game today? A real gamer?Gotta go with Derek Jeter for this question.

He's the first person who comes to mind... and he does a lot to compensate for his lack of physical prowess, via mental preparation.Who is the smartest baseball player in the game today? A real gamer?
derek jeter! also, albert pujols!Who is the smartest baseball player in the game today? A real gamer?albert pujols
I know nobody is with me on this one but i would have to say Chase Utley. He makes solid contact on all of his swings, he shows up everyday around 1230 1 on game days to watch video on his opponents Chase is an all around player and doesnt care about getting injured for his teammates. i would def. start a team aroundWho is the smartest baseball player in the game today? A real gamer?National League - Chase Utley. Extremely cerebral not to mention his great talent.

American League - Derek Jeter. He is always three plays ahead of the game situation. Captain of the greatest franchise in all of sports.

Both are students of the game.Who is the smartest baseball player in the game today? A real gamer?
I would say Ichiro Suzuki. He understands that he could be hitting homers if batting .220 were OK. He has a total zen approach to the game as well - hard to describe, but he is constantly working towards perfection.

He's crazy with it too - he'll remember his mechanics in detail - it's been reported he's "moved the pinky finger a half centimeter on the bat" in order to improve his form.

He studies as well in the quest for what he calls "the perfect game, the perfect season."

He's a trip, a fanatic... a Samurai of Baseball!!!

And he's always on top of the play - His BA and Error rate say a lot.
For those of you who said Jeter, good job. But he isn't the best.

That is reserved for Torii Hunter. One of the greatest defensive CF to ever play the game.

Honorable mention to...

Derek Jeter- The Captain!!

Omar Vizquel

Barry Bonds- JUST KIDDING!

Jim Edmonds- also one of the greatest defensive CF to ever playWho is the smartest baseball player in the game today? A real gamer?
Derrick Lee no doubt about it .
Well He retired last year but Craig Biggio would be my vote. Active now I would say Michael Young in Texas
i would have to say either Albert Pujols or Derek Jeter but I think just because im a redsox fan it should be Manny Rameirz (don't know if spelt it right)
he is retired but cal Ripcan jr. no question
Chase Utley - amazing in all aspects of the game.

but lets not forget the poor pitchers here: ( if that is ok).

for pitcher my picks are Jamie Moyer and Tommy Glavine. for them to be in the majors this long they obviously have some brains because it takes more than a good fastball to make it this long in the majors. Both Tommy and Jamie are crafty pitchers who have though of other ways to get an out. like one of Jamie Moyer's most effective moves is to tire out young hitters, and make them pop out. to me that is baseball smarts.
Without a doubt, GREG MADDUX. Think about it. Guy has never had amazing stuff, but yet he's won 350 games. He has maneuvered his way into hall of fame numbers and gold glove after gold glove. Maddux knows how to play his position better than anyone in the game, and makes up for his mediocre stuff with his knowledge of the game.
Since the hitters that came to mind have been mentioned, I'm going to go on a limb and nominate a pitcher:

Greg Maddux

Possibly the best pitcher of all time...

Arguably the best glove at his position all time...

Good bat handler and situational hitter (at least in his younger days)

But it's the stories that other players tell that are amazing:

A second baseman took a bad hop off the chin and Maddux came over to ask if he was OK. The fielder said he was. Maddux said "Good, because the next pitch is going to get hit to you." Maddux's next pitch was grounded to the second baseman who started a double play.

There is another story about how one of Maddux's teammates was struggling and asked him for advice. Your pitches are fine, he said, it's your selection that's the problem. During that pitcher's next start, Maddux called the pitches from the bench and the result was a 7-inning shutout.

He may not be on the field every day, but he is watching and learning every game. He gets my vote for smartest player.
Sal Fusano
greg maddux is the smartest player of alltime
Easy, Mike Schotia.
Maddux, no others need apply. Just wish I had gotten to mention him first.

Otherwise, I'd say the retired brilliance of Craig Biggio would have gotten a few votes as well.
Well I am going to say who is a really great pitcher: Cici Sabathia. He is really good and has a lot of pitcher duels. He can strike out a person easily and will definatly go down in the hall of fame.
greg maddux, david wright, paul loduca, tom glavine
Greg Maddox, I hate to say it. He doesn't have amazing stuff but he knows how to hit his spots, and he fields so well.
