It what they call a "National buy" Sonic purchases large blocks of advertising and it airs in a lot of different areas.
Our nearest Sonic is about 2 hours away and darn they have a great menu. I am not a huge tater-tot fan but boy do they have a great menu. Even their drink menu is great! And every time I am in the area of a Sonic, I stop by. If anything drive thru for their peach tea.
Usually that means one will be coming into the broadcast area in the near or near future. They do the early ads to see how much interest is in the area. They have the same thing in Buffalo, going on five years now and the nearest one is about 300 miles away.
I remember before Chili's arrived here, they showed commercials for them a while beforehand. It usually means that one will be started in the area "soon."

I think sonic is playing a mean trick on America. I'm from NJ and there is no Sonic anywhere nearby. Where are all the Sonics??? But at least the commercials are funny...
I don't know, but it's like the Cici's commercials and there are none in San Diego. I guess they like to tease you.

i live in northern california and ive yet to see a sonic anywhere,yet ive seen the commercials for years.....wtf
I always ask the same thing!!! I live in Wilmington, DE and the closest Sonic is 2 hours aways AND they JUST opened that one not too long ago and we've been seeing Sonic commercials for years. Strange.
i get mad too when i see the ad. the nearest one to us where we live in ohio is like 2 to 3 hrs away.
Im from Conn and we get those commercials too, but,,,,,,no Sonic to be found,
I wish I knew. I live in the sticks and see commercials for every restaurant in the Western U.S. The best we can do here is the new Chile's and it isn't very good.
The guy who said it's a national buy is correct, but it's sure annoying. I'm also in the Chicago area. The first time I had Sonic was for lunch in St Louis. Three hours later and 20 miles away I went into another Sonic for a Coconut Cream Pie shake. Now, whenever I'm out of town, I hope I pass one in mid-afternoon so I can have another one. Once, at a Sonic, I bumped into a guy who builds them. I asked if there are any that have inside dining rooms. He said yes, so it seems like they could build ones in Chicago where the weather isn't always so great. Someone just has to decide to make the investment. Please, someone build one in Chicago!
