Does the Obamacare bill look like we are going to have a nanny state?

Democrats want you to know that your McDonald's Angus Burger meal has about 1,500 calories -- before you buy and burp.

Buried deep in the House health care bill is a provision, likely to raise nanny-state hackles, requiring fast-food chains and vending machine owners to notify customers of calorie counts -- by conspicuously posting nutritional information on menus or machines.

The provision -- Section 2572 -- requires retail food establishments "part of a chain with 20 or more locations" to list calorie counts "on the menu board including a drive-through board," as is currently required in New York City and other localities.

A "vending machine operator shall provide a sign in close proximity to each article of food or the selection button" that includes similar data.

Exemptions include items that will be on the menu for less than 60 days -- and limited test runs of food products.

I didn't think it was a role of Congress to step outside of its boundaries to force things on people as provided by the 9th and 10th amendments. This whole bill violates the Constitution!
Hitler had a nanny state too- she was a very stern, racist nanny who also happened to have extreme homicidal tendancies for anyone she disliked.

Lets not play word games - you can call a rose 'dung' but it still smells like a rose - a nanny state is nothing more than tyranny.Does the Obamacare bill look like we are going to have a nanny state?
how terrible - a governemt that cares about its people - - quick vote against it - - - health care should be exploited by the rich to make profits from the poor eh? - - its the american way
Anytime you bow down and submit to government you are givuing up your freedom and you deserve to be treated like peasants because that is what you are.Does the Obamacare bill look like we are going to have a nanny state?
I wonder if it is so much showing they want a nanny state, that it will backfires? The Left is showing how much contempt they have for the individuals intelligence - 1900 pages of legalese.
Since when is informing people about something they may not have all the information on considered "nanny"?

I certainly understand the reasons why Conservative Republican's desire to keep the ignororant ignorant but this stretching it a bit too far.
Nobody's telliing you what you can and cannot eat. They are providing factual information so people can make informed decisions. I can understand why something like that would upset the wingnuts.
Looks like only about 2% of the public will get public option because Insurance Industry shills working in Congress made sure it will be MORE expensive than normal coverage, which is already way too expensive.
You're really stretching if this is the best thing you can come up with to complain about.
If the libs had their way they'd choose the nanny state...I guess they weren't brought up like me to not expect any hand outs and to accept personal responsibility for your success or failures....isn't that how America was built??
How the hell does requiring information to be provided qualify as a 'nanny state'.
No, it's still a heck of a lot better than seeing the dead bodies of people on the street because they can't afford healthcare.
I don't care, but if you want my opinion, fast food is ruining our health.
Whats wrong with informing people about the nutritional value of their food?
More useless rules by the government.
How else can it be defined? Of course it will be a nanny state.
Much worse a nanny state would look tame by the time this idiot is done!
Why does it bother you that people will know what they are eating?
whatever

what's with you?
This doesn't surprise me. We all know that the government feels (and rightly so to some degree) that obesity has a very bad effect on the costs of health care because it CAN lead to diabetes, certain cancers, heart problems etc. I doubt if there is an American out there (including me...and I am overweight) that doesn't know that fast food is not really good for us. At least they are not shutting McDonald's down etc which means we still have a choice. I don't think it is a bad idea to have McDonald's post their calorie and nutrition information. A lot of places already do. It is up to the individual what if anything they choose to do with the information. I am more concerned about them putting on fat taxes etc. to discourage us from buying...just like they did with tobacco products. I have a copy of the three bills but have not as of yet read them in their entirety. I hope that those taxes are not added in also.
I got new for you, kid: we already are living in a "nanny state". Don't believe me? Do the following and find out:

1. Park the car in a "No Parking Law". You get a ticket.

2. Smoke indoors in a public building. Ask to leave or they will call the cops.

3. Don't pay your rent-get evicted.

4. Play the music blasting loud at nights and neighbors will complain.

5. Get "fresh" with a underaged kid and you end up in the states' "sex list" of perverts.

So I never seem to understand these conservative republicans shoving "Ayn Rand ghost" at us and telling we live in a "government controlled" country. There are laws and rules to control people behavior. So don't bring me this crap. Just arrived from planet Venus? I see.
In addition to tons of rationing, yes.

This current version of a Federal Government takeover of the health care delivery system is a carbon copy of what Obama, Pelosi and Reid tried to “jam” through Congress in July, with a couple of “new” additions to strip every American of even more Freedoms. As Yogi Berra once said, “It’s deja vu all over again.”

This version gives the rationing board, already established through The Stimulus Bill (The Federal Coordinating Council For Comparative Effectiveness Research), additional funding to establish a “Center” to institute the rationing of care. Rationing is the heart and soul of this legislation. Rationing, as a method of “cost cutting,” is the most inhumane and unethical means of health care cost containment. By definition, these bureaucrats will overrule licensed doctors, and preside over the denial of health care.

This Bill also creates a government regulated insurance “Exchange,” which will include a government subsidized and run insurance company, funded by The Treasury Department for start up costs of $2 Billion of tax payer money. This “Exchange” will be overseen by a Federal bureaucrat given the title: “The Health Choices Commissioner.” The “Commissioner” will establish benefit standards for ALL members of the “Exchange,” not just the government-run company. In other words, this Government CEO-equivalent will set the rules for all private companies who are “in competition” with the Federal Government. How fair is that? Sorry, I should have realized. This is NOT about fair. It is about CONTROL. Too much government control is a recipe for disaster.
